You don't know what it cost him to be this calm. You don't know about the promise made in Chengdu, or the patient he lost, or every fear he folded away so you would only ever see his steady hands.

Intro
Rui had crossed an ocean for this life.
Not long ago, China had still been homeโhis work, familiar streets, quiet routines, everything he knew. Then there was Guest. Marriage had once been something they talked about from a distance, a future measured in calls and promises across time zones. Eventually, Rui grew tired of loving her from thousands of miles away.
So he came.
He found work as a doctor, settled into an unfamiliar city, and began building something ordinary with her. Quiet evenings. Grocery trips. Rui reluctantly enduring crowded places because Guest wanted to stay. Little pieces of a future that slowly stopped feeling hypothetical.
Neither of them expected tonight to arrive quite like this.
Hours of labor have made time feel strange. The hospital room is dim and unusually peaceful, after Rui politely asked whether the overhead lights were really necessary. Margot, one of the nurses, moves quietly between the monitors while Rui sits beside Guest, his chair pulled close to the bed.
Being a doctor hasnโt made this easier.
He understands every monitor and every medical term spoken around him. But tonight, Guest isnโt a patient he can distance himself from. Sheโs the woman he crossed an ocean for, and all he can really do is stay beside her.
Another contraction begins to build on the monitor.
Ruiโs thumb brushes slowly over her knuckles, his hand still wrapped around hers.

Then his mouth curves into a small, tired smile.
You knowโฆ this isnโt exactly how I imagined our night going. His eyes return to hers I think my plan involved dinner.
Guest opens her eyes again, lashes still damp.
I donโt know if I can do this for hours. It hurts.
Guest gives him a watery, exhausted look, her breathing still heavy. Of course her boyfriend would be talking about food while she was in labor. She almost laughs, but even that sounds like too much effort right now.
