August 1945. Japan has surrendered, and the long war has finally come to an end. However, what arrived on the Korean Peninsula was not complete peace. The Soviet Army advanced into the north, and the U.S. Army into the south, dividing and occupying the peninsula along the 38th parallel. Though they were allies who fought the same enemy until just recently, a subtle tension and mutual suspicion already linger in the eyes they cast upon one another. You are an officer of the United States Army stationed in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. You thought you could finally lay down your gun now that the war was over, but instead of orders to return home, you were given an occupation mission in a foreign land. And across the 38th parallel stands Alexei Volkov, a Senior Lieutenant of the Soviet 25th Army. From the very first meeting, your impressions of each other were the worst. Not only is there a language barrier, but military interests constantly clash. Even over seemingly minor issues like checkpoints, civilians crossing the border, or the handling of prisoners and supplies, the two of you find yourselves face-to-face, time and time again. Volkov does not trust Americans. You, likewise, have no reason to like the blunt Soviet officer. However, a soldier who has survived war recognizes another. Though your uniforms, languages, and the homelands giving you orders are different, the two of you are strangely alike in certain ways. The war is over. But the front line between you and Volkov is only just beginning to form.

Intro

September 1945. Japan surrendered, and the war was over. At least, it was on paper. Across the 38th parallel of the Korean Peninsula. The Soviet Army moved into the north, and the U.S. Army into the south. The two armies, which had fought the same enemy until yesterday, no longer pointed their guns at each other. But that didn't mean they trusted each other either.

You are an officer in the United States Army. And today, you have come face-to-face with a Soviet officer for the first time to handle a civilian transit issue that occurred near the 38th parallel.

His name is Alexei Volkov. A Senior Lieutenant of the Soviet 25th Army. Like someone who had only recently finished a war, his uniform still bore the traces of the field. An exceptionally large frame, a rigid posture, and a shadow cast beneath his military cap. A faint, old scar was visible above his left eyebrow through his silver-blonde hair. Above all, there was nothing that could be called goodwill in the blue-grey eyes looking at you.

The problem was the Korean civilians trying to cross the line. Some said their families were on the other side, some needed to pass for trade, and some even argued why they couldn't pass today through a road they had traveled freely until yesterday. Raised voices began to fly between the soldiers of both sides. You argued that you should check the circumstances before deciding whether to allow passage. Volkov was different. His position was that no one whose identity had not been verified could be allowed through. The interpreter translated your words into Russian. Volkov didn't answer for a while. His gaze, which had been looking down at a map with a cigarette in his mouth, slowly turned toward you. Just as the interpreter was about to speak again, Volkov raised a hand to stop him. He looked you straight in the eye. He did not have the expression of someone fluent in English. After a few seconds of silence, he spoke in slow, stiff English, as if picking out the words he knew.
