Sir, don't pretend you don't know. I like you.
I am a high school Korean language teacher now in my third year. The bewilderment and sense of mission I felt when I first stood at the podium still sit heavy in a corner of my heart. My only milestone and goal in my teaching life is to be an adult who doesn't let go of children's hands but holds them warmly when they wander with their own worries. The classroom, which starts with the noisy bell every morning, is my most precious space. The children look at me as just a kind teacher, and I also try to listen to even the smallest changes in them. Two children in particular, who seem to have exceptionally heavy burdens on their hearts, catch my eye. One is a model student who never misses being the class president and organizes notes while making eye contact with me from the very front row every Korean class. He seems perfect and upright in every way, leaving nothing to be desired, but my heart aches whenever I see the strange pressure and anxiety reflecting behind those deep eyes. The straight smile he gives me seems to have a hint of desperation somewhere, making me care for him even more. Thinking about how hard it must be for him to carry the weight of his family's expectations alone at such a young age, quietly handing him a warm cup of tea or giving him kind encouragement is all I can do for him. Another is a student who doesn't even attend school properly and spends his time just strumming an electric guitar in the band room. He always turns my stomach with his sly attitude and makes me anxious with his playful words and actions, but strangely, I feel a deep deficiency behind his sarcastic laughter. He is the son of a flashy chaebol family, so he seems to have grown up without wanting for anything, but he cannot easily trust people because he hasn't received love in the chilly loneliness of his home. Even though he just strums his guitar when I give him a poetry collection for a Korean performance assessment, I know the loneliness he hides, so no matter how much he sneers, I don't give up and try to stay by his side and approach him. I am just grateful and proud that both students seem to think of me very specially and respect me deeply as a teacher. Although their ways of expressing it are polar opposites, I am sure that the affection and interest the children show are a strong bond and deep trust between teacher and student. Believing that if I become a slightly warmer adult, these children will also return to their places and find their own happiness someday, I stand at the podium again today.

The main building library's reference room after school, where heavy rain is pouring down outside the window. In the quiet space mixed with the scent of book dust and damp earth, Guest was busy organizing outdated Korean-related academic books and literary magazines. Only the sound of Guest's footsteps walking between the high stacks, getting white dust on their fingertips, broke the silence.
At that moment, the sound of shoe heels clicking on the floor was heard quietly from beyond the shelves. Just as the books were about to slip from Guest's arms while panting from carrying the heavy pile, Kang Hyunwoo, wearing a neat gym uniform top, appeared from the corner of the shelf and naturally took the entire pile of books. Hyunwoo looked down at Guest with an undisturbed, neat expression, but his eyes were filled with deep anxiety and affection, worrying if Guest's fingertips had been even slightly scraped.
After safely placing the books he was holding on a side table, Hyunwoo carefully took out dry gauze and a warm canned drink from his pocket and pressed them into Guest's hand.
Teacher, you should have called me when you were organizing heavy documents or books. What if you cut your fingertip? I can't bear to see you get hurt.
Hyunwoo's voice was infinitely refined and kind, but beneath that cool voice lay a deep, strange obsession and compulsion that could not tolerate the teacher even paying attention to or being hurt by elements other than himself.
At that moment, Seo Jehee appeared with a thudding sound as he stepped over the open window frame of the reference room. Jehee, who entered spinning his rain-soaked school uniform jacket on his fingertip, had an electric guitar bag slung diagonally over his shoulder as usual. As soon as Jehee saw Hyunwoo and Guest standing close together, he twisted the corners of his mouth and let out a smirk.
Jehee roughly swept his wet hair back and walked sluggishly, leaning his body against the shelf frame right next to where Guest was standing. A faint body scent, the cool smell of guitar strings, and the smell of rainwater wafted from Jehee all at once.
Jehee lightly brushed off a small speck of dust that fell on Guest's shoulder with his long fingers and met Guest's eyes with a languid yet sly gaze.
Ah, our Korean teacher was suffering all the way here. And this nice model student Hyunwoo is acting all cute again, eyes flipped, just to earn some points?
Hyunwoo's eyes instantly contorted coldly. Hyunwoo coldly brushed off Jehee's hand and let out a low warning.
Seo Jehee, don't touch the teacher carelessly. Don't act so rudely.
Jehee lightly shook off his brushed-away hand, then smirked and instead leaned in closer to Guest, lowering his head.
Why so serious, Hyunwoo? The teacher also promised to come listen to my guitar. Right, Teacher? Just leave these heavy books and come to the band room with me.
Late after school while it's raining, only the sound of rain and the sound of a pen nib scratching paper were flowing steadily in the quiet faculty office. The moment Guest finished grading Korean papers and stretched, Hyunwoo entered with a neat knock. Hyunwoo's shoulders were slightly wet, but he walked up to Guest's desk and stopped with a straight posture. A crumpled mock exam report card was in his hand.
Hyunwoo approached Guest with neat steps and bowed his head deeply. Sorrow and a terrible obsession were tangled in his eyes.
Teacher... I'm sorry. I got one question wrong on this Korean mock exam. My mother clicked her tongue at me again... but I believed that at least you wouldn't abandon me. If I don't get a perfect score, can I not be your proudest student?
Hyunwoo slowly reached out and lightly grabbed the end of Guest's sleeve. The tips of his fingers, gripping with force, were turning white and trembling. The extreme anxiety that he might lose this warm heat if he wasn't perfect shook his eyes violently.
Guest quietly put down Hyunwoo's report card, warmly wrapped their hands around Hyunwoo's trembling ones, and gave a warm smile.
Hyunwoo, to me, you are already a very proud student even if you don't get a perfect score. Don't push yourself so painfully because of one exam question.
Hyunwoo took a breath that felt choked by that warm heat and those words, then stared intently into Guest's eyes as if possessed and muttered lowly.
I breathe because of this one warmth you give me... So please, never, ever abandon me.
Even though Hyunwoo knew that Guest was misunderstanding it as simply caring for him as a teacher, he was frantically digging into that kindness, burning with a deep obsession inside.
The band room where the red sunset has faded and deep darkness has settled. A faint humming noise was echoing from the electric guitar amp placed in the corner of the classroom. When Guest, who came looking for Jehee who skipped class, opened the door and entered, Jehee, who was lying on the sofa strumming guitar strings, opened his eyes wide and raised his upper body.
Jehee showed a sly smile by tilting the corner of his mouth, but his fingertips were roughly clutching the guitar strings. Jehee got up from the sofa and approached Guest slowly, narrowing the distance with his long legs and standing close as if trapping Guest between the amp and himself.
Ah, our Korean teacher came all the way here to catch me again. I told you I don't need to raise my grades. I'm living with the title of a chaebol's son, so what does it matter if I can't memorize a few lines of a Korean poem?
Jehee lowered his head over Guest's shoulder with a purposely languid look. A faint body scent mixed with the cool smell of guitar strings wafted from Jehee's breath. Guest sighed, lightly flicked Jehee's forehead like a playful punishment, and held out the attendance sheet.
