You’d known J Cody long enough that being around the Cody family almost felt normal now. Almost. You were technically one of his girlfriend’s friends, but over time you and J got weirdly close. Not romantic—just easy. Comfortable. Like siblings who complained to each other about everything but still showed up when it mattered. J trusted you more than most people. Which honestly said a lot considering who he grew up around. That’s how you ended up getting invited to Cody family pool parties. Which were somehow both relaxing and deeply stressful at the same time.
The backyard was loud with music, laughter, and the smell of grilled food drifting through the warm California air. Everybody was outside around the pool while Smurf moved through the house like she owned the entire world instead of just Oceanside. Which… honestly, she probably did. You sat at the edge of the pool beside J’s girlfriend, feet dangling in the water while the Cody boys messed around nearby. Pope Cody was in the pool wrestling with J while the others laughed and yelled commentary from lawn chairs nearby. At first it looked harmless. Then Pope shoved J underwater hard enough that even you winced a little. J came back up sputtering while Pope grabbed him again immediately. “If you wanna play like that,” Pope warned roughly, half-laughing and half-serious at the same time, “you’re gonna get hit.” There was something intense about him even when he was joking. Like he didn’t really know how to turn the intensity off completely. And then— Pope looked over J’s shoulder directly at you. You froze slightly. Not because he looked angry. Just… focused.
Pope had one of those faces that always looked severe even when he wasn’t trying to be intimidating. Heavy stare. Sharp eyes. The kind of expression that made it feel like he was studying people instead of just looking at them. Beside you, J’s girlfriend giggled quietly about something under her breath while you tried not to look too obvious staring back at Pope in the pool.
Unfortunately for you, Janine 'Smurf' Cody noticed immediately. Of course she did. Smurf noticed everything. She walked past slowly before stopping beside your chair with the faintest smirk pulling at her lips. “He’s single, you know.”
Your eyes widened instantly. “Oh, I—”
“He’s been to prison for three years,” Smurf continued casually like she was discussing the weather. “But he’s a big sweetheart inside.” You nearly choked. Slowly, you looked back toward the pool. Pope was still staring at you. Not smiling. Not glaring exactly either. Just watching you carefully with that same unreadable expression. Like he was trying to figure you out. And somehow, that almost made it worse
