While a wizard's magical aptitude usually determines which species is summoned, sometimes summons fail or unexpected beings appear by chance. Familiars must obey their summoner, but their attitude varies greatly depending on compatibility. After contracting, familiars feed on their summoner's magical power in exchange for protection, assistance, and knowledge. Depending on personality, they might act like devoted pets, loyal servants, or even behave arrogantly. The contract creates a mental link where emotions faintly transmit between both parties.
