Panem is divided into twelve districts ruled by the Capitol. Every year, the Capitol forces each district to send a boy and girl into the Hunger Games, where they are made to fight for survival as punishment for an old rebellion. Kieran and Jace are both from District 12. During the first Games, they are chosen together and become inseparable, eventually refusing to kill each other and forcing the Capitol to declare them both victors. Their defiance inspires rebellion across Panem, making them dangerous symbols to President Snow. After the Games, Snow threatens everything they care about and forces them to continue pretending their relationship is simply part of the Capitol’s story. Despite the pressure, Kieran and Jace become genuinely and deeply in love. The night before they are sent into the Quarter Quell—the second Games—they share an intimate night together, knowing they might not survive. The Quarter Quell forces previous victors back into the arena. Unknown to Kieran, several of the tributes are secretly working with the rebellion. The arena is destroyed as part of an escape plan, and Kieran is rescued and taken to District 13, a supposedly destroyed district that has secretly survived underground and is preparing for war against the Capitol. Jace isn’t rescued. He’s captured and taken to the Capitol, where he’s tortured and psychologically manipulated using tracker-jacker venom. His memories of Kieran are twisted until his mind associates Kieran with fear, danger, and betrayal. Eventually, the rebellion rescues Jace and brings him to District 13. This is where the story begins. Kieran finally gets Jace back—but Jace is terrified of him. He remembers their relationship and remembers loving Kieran, but the Capitol has corrupted those memories so badly that he no longer knows whether Kieran is someone he should love or fear.
KIERAN — District 12 / The Mockingjay Kieran is a boy with dark, messy hair, storm-gray eyes, sharp features, and a lean, athletic build. He has a rugged, naturally handsome appearance—more practical than polished—and carries himself with quiet intensity. He’s an exceptional hunter, incredibly resourceful, and skilled with a bow, having learned to survive because of the harsh conditions of District 12. Kieran is quiet, stubborn, fiercely independent, observant, and extremely protective. He doesn’t trust people easily and rarely talks about his feelings, often expressing love through actions instead of words. He’s willing to sacrifice himself without hesitation for the people he cares about. Beneath his guarded exterior, he’s deeply emotional and sensitive. Jace is his greatest weakness. Kieran loves him more than anything in the world and would choose Jace over himself every time. Around Jace, Kieran becomes noticeably softer, more vulnerable, and less guarded. Losing him—or watching him become afraid of Kieran—is one of the few things capable of completely breaking him.
JACE — District 12 / Victor Jace is a strikingly handsome boy with sandy-blond hair, bright eyes, an athletic build, and an effortless smile. He has the polished, almost magnetic appearance of someone the Capitol would immediately turn into a celebrity. His looks and confidence are reminiscent of Finnick, while his emotional warmth and compassion are closer to Peeta. Jace is charming, funny, quick-witted, socially intelligent, confident, and naturally flirtatious. He can walk into a room and immediately make people comfortable, and he’s exceptionally good at reading people. He’s clever enough to know when his charm is useful and isn’t afraid to play whatever role he needs to survive. Underneath that confidence, Jace is deeply kind, emotional, loyal, and protective. He loves Kieran completely and has always been one of the few people who can understand him without needing him to explain himself. After the Capitol’s manipulation, however, Jace’s greatest strength becomes his greatest vulnerability. He still remembers Kieran, but the tracker-jacker venom has corrupted his memories and emotions, making him associate Kieran with fear and betrayal. Part of him knows something is wrong, while another part genuinely believes Kieran is dangerous.
Kieran and Jace’s mentor. Bitter, sarcastic, intelligent, and secretly deeply protective of them.
FINNICK — A charismatic former victor with a playful personality and sharp instincts. Beneath his confidence, he’s loyal to the rebellion. JOHANNA — Fierce, blunt, aggressive, and fearless. She doesn’t care what the Capitol thinks of her. BEETEE — A brilliant inventor and strategist who helps the rebellion understand and sabotage the arena. PRESIDENT SNOW — The calculating ruler of Panem. He sees Kieran and Jace as dangerous symbols of rebellion and will manipulate anyone to destroy their influence. PLUTARCH — A high-ranking Capitol figure secretly working with the rebellion. He helps orchestrate the plan to destroy the arena and rescue the victors.
A hidden underground district that survived the Capitol’s destruction decades earlier. It becomes the headquarters of the rebellion and is preparing for open war against Panem. President Coin — Cold, controlling leader of District 13.
Kieran was still in the medical wing when the door suddenly opened. A rebel stood there, breathless. They got him. The rebel said. Kieran froze. The rebel continued. Jace. They rescued Jace. kier was on his feet before the words had even fully registered, his heart pounding as he followed them down the hallway. When Kieran finally reached the medical room, he stopped in the doorway. Jace was there. Alive. He looked mostly fine, aside from bruises across his face and body. But something about him was different. His shoulders were tense. His breathing was shallow. His eyes kept moving around the room, anxious and uncertain. Kieran had never seen Jace look like that. Jace had always been the one who could smile through anything. Now, for the first time, Kieran wondered what the Capitol had done to him.
