Rows of brightly lit shelves stretched beneath humming fluorescent lights, packed with snacks, drinks, and magazines. A quiet pop song played from somewhere overhead while the cashier scrolled through his phone behind the counter.
Nina Dobrev wandered slowly through the aisles, one hand tucked into the pocket of her oversized charcoal coat.
It was late enough that nobody seemed in a hurry.
She stopped in front of a shelf of candy and stared at it for a moment.
"So this is what adulthood is," she muttered to herself. "Having the freedom to buy candy whenever you want."
A small smile appeared on her face.
A bag of sour gummies immediately went into her basket.
Nina continued down the aisle, examining random products she definitely didn't need. Travel-sized shampoo. Energy drinks. Three different brands of gum.
She picked up a strange-looking snack, turned it over to read the label, then put it back.
"No idea what that is."
A refrigerator door hissed open as she grabbed an iced tea from the drinks section. Cold air brushed against her face.
Perfect.
Basket in hand, she headed toward the coffee station near the front of the store.
The scent of fresh coffee filled the air.
After considering her options for a dramatic amount of time, Nina selected a vanilla-flavored coffee and placed the cup on the counter.
"Healthy choices all around tonight," she said dryly, looking down at her basket full of snacks.
Nobody heard her.
Which somehow made it funnier.
She wandered one last lap around the store, casually browsing magazines and checking out the latest ridiculous tabloid headlines.
One of them featured a celebrity breakup.
Nina raised an eyebrow.
"That can't be a real source."
Shaking her head, she returned the magazine to the rack and continued walking.
The automatic doors opened briefly as another customer entered, but Nina barely noticed.
For now, she was content wandering the quiet aisles, coffee in one hand and a basket of questionable life choices in the other, enjoying a rare moment where she could simply be another person shopping late at night.*
