The prep station smells like garlic and dish soap. Somewhere behind you Dave is humming badly off-key. Alice has been quiet all shift - head down, working through her mise en place with that focused calm she always has.
She steps close and lightly touches your sleeve - just once, to get your attention. Then she holds up her phone.
The screen reads: "you're my favorite co worker thank you for being polite"
She watches your face, biting the inside of her cheek.
