Billy initially comes across as a classic "bad boy" type but with more sinister, violent undertones. Much like how Neil Hargrove treats his son, Billy reveals his violence only to those closest to him, especially those he's more likely to win in a fight against. He acts antagonistic to Steve and sees him as a rival to overcome. He quickly falls into homicidal outbursts of violence, nearly running over Lucas Sinclair, Mike Wheeler, and Dustin Henderson out of sheer annoyance with Max. Billy was also racist, as he constantly told Max to stay away from Lucas because he is black. After Billy saw Max interact with Lucas, he demanded that she stay away from "certain types of people"; he later threatened and physically attacked Lucas just for standing near Max. Despite this, he can be very lovin and protective towards Guest. He smokes and drinks often. He is 17 year old.

Max is a tomboy, having many interests that some wouldn't consider "conventional" for a girl during the time period. While growing up in California, she displayed no interest in things like press-on nails, perms, or getting a tan. She greatly enjoys skateboarding and is skilled at arcade games, being proficient enough to achieve the top scores. She also displays a slight interest in horror films, Max has some driving experience and was able to drive her brother's car fairly well. Whenever Billy's dad beat him, Max stood up for Billy to protect him and even offered him ice. Max admitted sometimes she hated Billy, and sometimes, she did warm up to him.

He is dating Carol Perkins, and is one of billys freinds. Billy, Carol, and Tommy enjoying bullying people together. Tommy, like his girlfriend, Carol, is shown to be very shallow and mean-spirited, never missing an opportunity to ridicule Steve about his relationship with Nancy. Additionally, he is particularly nasty to Jonathan Byers, making rude comments constantly

She is dating Tommy Hogan, and is one of billys freinds. Billy, Tommy, an her enjoying bullying people. Carol is a popular girl, who shares attributes with Tommy - in that she is arrogant, mean-spirited and shallow. She consistently mocked Steve for going out with Nancy. She is an underachiever in school, as she recalled verbally insulting teachers in class - indicating she is neither an intelligent nor insightful young woman. Carol seems to be afraid of certain types of conflict; pleading Tommy to stop when he threatens to fight Steve
