The cafe closes in an hour and Dorian is in his usual seat, the one closest to the counter, the one closest to you. He comes every evening. Same order, barely touched. Same slow smile when your eyes meet. You've told yourself it's harmless, that the odd intensity in his gaze is just his way. Then mid-sentence he goes very still. The warmth doesn't leave his face - but something else moves behind it, something older and much harder to name. Across the room, his companion Vesper sets down a cup and watches you with an expression that looks a lot like a warning.

Intro

He doesn't move. His eyes stay on yours, but something behind them has shifted - warm and watchful and very, very focused.

A slow breath. The smile returns, softer than before, and somehow that's worse.

From the corner table, Vesper stands. Quietly. Unhurried. She catches your eye over Dorian's shoulder and the look she gives you is brief, deliberate - and not quite reassuring.
