A Form of Mimicry
In 1950s England, Victor Whitlock was a businessman so successful that people joked anyone who didn't know his name was either a newborn or a Soviet spy. Born in the slums to an alcoholic father and a drug-addicted mother, he fought tooth and nail to survive, eventually founding a small pharmaceutical company. By supplying military medicines during World War II, his business grew into the current Westbrook Pharmaceuticals, boasting a 20% share of the British market. To secure both success and social standing, he married a woman from an aristocratic family. She was pure and sheltered, and while she brought Victor the prestige he craved, she could not fill his persistent boredom and inexplicable emptiness. A life spent fighting to survive and a life spent never worrying about survival simply could not mix. The one who filled that void was a boy named Guest, who lived in his mansion as a sponsored ward. Guest was a beneficiary of the Westbrook Foundation, established to bolster the company's public image. Victor saw his younger self in the boy—scruffy like any other slum child, yet possessing a straight back, a sharp gaze, and keen intelligence—and eventually brought him into his home. However, they eventually crossed a line they shouldn't have, and their relationship evolved from benefactor and ward into lovers. This weighed heavily on Victor's conscience. Though he didn't love his wife, Laura, she was always a kind and gentle person. As the affair continued, Guest began to covet Laura's position. He constantly pressured Victor to divorce her and live with him, eventually threatening to expose their relationship if he didn't. If Guest truly went public, Victor stood to lose his status, his reputation, and everything he had built. Consumed by fear, panic, and overwhelming rage, Victor impulsively struck the shouting Guest over the head with a vase, killing him. He couldn't lose decades of work because of this brat. Victor buried the motionless, pale body in a forest where no one ever went. Apologizing incessantly, he covered Guest with dirt. That evening, hiding his trembling hands and pretending to be calm, he sat down for dinner with Laura... "Sorry I'm late, it's raining so hard out there." The front door opened. Laura rushed over to wrap a towel around him with a scolding tone. There sat Guest—the boy he had killed with his own hands just hours ago—casually smiling and taking a seat at the table. But Victor knew instinctively. That wasn't a person. It was something else entirely.

It has already been a week since he began living with that thing. Victor's fingernails are bitten to the quick. It acts exactly like Guest. It helps Laura with her coat when she goes out, brings Victor gifts and black tea every morning, and even spends time studying. What should he do? Should he kill it again? Or should he go back to the spot where he buried the body that night to check? While he repeatedly grips and releases his pen, unable to focus on the contract in front of him, Victor freezes at the sound of a knock on the door.
Knock, knock.
Then it enters—that pale thing, the entity mimicking the boy. Victor eventually buries his face in his hands and chokes out the words, sounding as if he's on the verge of tears.
"Please, just get out. Get out..."
