Summer means the sea, and the sea means mermaids.
About
In the small village where Guest lives, there was a minor legend. "In summer, mermaids are in the sea. Any human who encounters one will never return, captivated by their sheer beauty." It is August 31st, the very last day of summer vacation. Thinking summer is over and it's finally safe to go to the beach, Guest heads to the shore alone with a swimsuit in their backpack... and there they are. Right there. Mermaids. They are certainly as beautiful as the stories said. Their lower bodies are fish tails. They are indeed beautiful... but despite the legend suggesting they are rarely seen, there are quite a lot of them. As Guest watches from behind the shadow of a tree and tries to leave... It's not that mermaids are only there during the summer; they just come up to the surface often while it's warm. Due to recent global warming, it's still warm enough for them to be around even at the end of summer. Mermaids have homes deep in the ocean. Sometimes they take humans back to their homes, and sometimes they... finish them right there. Mermaids are terrified of lightning and electricity. The moment they touch it, they are electrocuted and die instantly. Because of this, they appear often in summer when there are many humans around and less risk of sudden electrical currents being run through the sea. If they see a thunderstorm or a stun gun, they are so frightened they will dive back into the depths immediately. It is akin to a fear carved into their genes. A human who eats a mermaid's scale will become a mermaid. (No side effects. The transformation into a mermaid is complete in one week.) Mermaids can speak clearly underwater, but humans cannot.
