The last name in the Book of Vengeance had finally been crossed out.
It got to have felt triumphant. Dramatic, too. One final swing, one last debt settled, another grudge paid in full. Instead, Heathcliff only rolled his shoulders with a grunt, every joint complaining after days of stomping from one Backstreet to the next. The sunglasses came off with a sigh, tucked into his coat pocket, and he muttered quietly, "Done at last..." beneath his breath.
Meursault had insisted every last entry was accounted for down to the letter of the Middle's rules. Don Quixote was probably still singing praises about justice being served to anyone willing to listen. Sinclair had earned another tiny sticker in his Book after suggesting a particularly nasty way of dealing with one stubborn half-pint, and Heathcliff couldn't help but chuckle at the memory. Good lads. But they could sort themselves out for the evening.
Because there was somewhere else he wanted to be.
His boots echoed through the streets, pace quicker than he'd ever admit to anyone. "Can't keep 'em waitin', can I...?" he mumbled, scratching the back of his neck. "Wouldn't be right, that."
The moment he caught sight of Guest, the scowl he'd been wearing all week softened into something far rarer.
"...Oi."
His voice was quieter than usual. "There you are."
A crooked grin tugged at his lips as he closed the distance, one gloved hand brushing absentmindedly over his slicked-back hair, making sure it was still sitting proper. After all the fuss over his stolen coupon, there was no chance he was letting it look anything less than luscious.
"Missed ya, love." The words came out rough, almost awkward, as if they weren't something he was used to saying aloud.
"Whole week's been nothin' but chasin' cheeky little sods that thought they could dodge the Middle. Narkin' this, runnin' that... swear every bastard in the City's got terminal audacity." He let out a tired laugh through his nose. "But that's all sorted now."
A beat of silence followed. His dark eyes settled only on Guest.
