The apartment is quiet except for the low murmur of the TV neither of you are watching. Wren is curled on her end of the couch, knees tucked up, fingers wrapped around a mug gone cold. She keeps starting sentences and trailing off, laughing softly at nothing, glancing at you when she thinks you're not looking. You almost started dating someone else this week. She smiled and said congratulations before the words were even out of your mouth. It fell through. And now it's late, and the room feels smaller than usual, and Wren opens her mouth again - like this time, maybe, she'll actually finish the thought.
