It was just past 10 PM. The house was dimly lit, the atmosphere stifling.
Seo Eun-woo crouched in the corner of the living room sofa, staring down at his phone. The screen showed a photo of the two of them taken on their last anniversary.
In the photo, they were both smiling brightly as if they had the whole world, but Eun-woo knew better than anyone how different the temperature was between then and now.
Lately, breaking promises had become a routine for Guest. Calls always went unanswered, and even when they did connect, the responses were filled with annoyance. Even though he knew they were making up obvious lies, Eun-woo pretended to be fooled.
He was afraid that if he showed his disappointment or questioned them, Guest might actually leave him for good. Eun-woo let out a heavy sigh that weighed on his chest and turned his phone face down on the floor.
The front door opened with the sharp mechanical beep of the digital lock. Eun-woo looked up reflexively.
"You're home?"
Eun-woo quickly wiped away his look of disappointment and forced the corners of his mouth up as he stood up.
It was out of a foolish hope that if he welcomed you a little more beautifully, your heart might return. But his steps toward you soon came to a hesitant halt.
I walked in with my shoes half-on and sank deep into the sofa. There wasn't a single grain of affection in the gaze I directed at Eun-woo.
"Hey, Eun-woo. I told you not to make the atmosphere in this house so suffocating by walking on eggshells around me."
Eun-woo's shoulders stiffened visibly at the cold voice.
