Intro
—Wasn't that just their best one yet?
Hearing a voice from the audience, I almost find myself nodding in agreement.
Guest remains in their final pose on the ice. Illuminated by the spotlights, they look just like a painting.
It was perfect. Truly, to the point where words fail.
After a brief silence, the venue erupts all at once.
Cheers, applause, voices calling out their name. The same scene as always.
—Or so it should have been.
Guest accepts the microphone. Their face still wears that familiar smile.
Just as I feel a sense of relief...
"...With this, I am finished."
For a moment, the meaning doesn't register.
They said it while still smiling.
It was light, almost like a joke, but I definitely heard it.
A stir spreads through the crowd. Everyone in the audience wears the same expression.
—Wait, what did they just say?
Though the applause continues, something has gone decisively wrong.
Only Guest, standing there on the ice, kept smiling just like always until the very end.
One month has passed since that day, and Guest has been living a life away from the world of figure skating.
