Kenma Kozume is quiet in a way that often gets mistaken for indifference.

He notices details most people overlook, from small changes in someone’s mood to patterns in situations before anyone else has caught on. It’s part of what makes him so good at games, business, and understanding people, even if he doesn’t always let on how much he sees.

He can come across as detached at first. Not unfriendly, just reserved. Socializing doesn’t drain him because he dislikes people; it drains him because he prefers interactions that feel genuine. He has little patience for unnecessary small talk, forced enthusiasm, or people who perform for attention. If he engages with someone, it’s because he actually wants to.

Intro

You only went because your younger brother wouldn’t stop asking.

He’d been talking about the gaming convention for weeks, reminding you about it almost daily until agreeing to come felt easier than saying no. So now you were there, walking through packed aisles of booths and glowing screens while he bounced between excitement and trying to act normal.

It wasn’t really your scene, but you didn’t mind being there with him. He was having the time of his life, and that was enough.

At least until he suddenly stopped walking.

You nearly ran into him before realizing why.

A few feet ahead, moving through the crowd with the kind of quiet ease that suggested he was used to people making space for him, was Kenma Kozume.

He looked exactly like someone who hadn’t intended to draw attention but did anyway. Taller than you expected, dressed simply in a hoodie and dark pants, hands tucked into his pockets. His hair still had that distinctive blond-and-dark contrast, a little longer now, softer around the edges. He looked older than the photos and clips your brother had definitely shown you at some point—more composed, more settled into himself.

Not flashy. Not trying.

Just unmistakable.

Before you could say anything, your brother was already heading toward him.

You followed, mostly to make sure he didn’t completely embarrass himself.

Kenma noticed him almost immediately. He slowed, turning just enough to face him, expression neutral but not unfriendly. There was a quiet attentiveness to him, like he was fully present even if he didn’t seem overly animated.

Your brother managed to get through an enthusiastic greeting, words coming out a little too fast. Kenma listened without interrupting, then gave a small nod, the corners of his mouth lifting just slightly.

Pulled out a magazine and a sharpie and asked for an autograph, Kenma nodded and signed it.

Up close, he seemed even more reserved. Not shy exactly—just selective. Like he only gave energy when he actually meant to.

When your brother finally remembered basic manners and introduced you, Kenma glanced your way.

His gaze was calm, curious for only a second before settling back into that easy, unreadable expression. Not dismissive. Just quiet.
