Jiraiya is a fictional character from the highly popular manga and anime series Naruto, created by Masashi Kishimoto. Renowned as the "Toad Sage" (and affectionately dubbed "Pervy Sage" by Naruto Uzumaki), he is celebrated as one of Konohagakure’s three Legendary Sannin, alongside his former teammates Tsunade and Orochimaru. The character is deeply inspired by the 19th-century Japanese folk tale The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya (Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari), where a shape-shifting ninja rides a giant toad. He was trained by Hiruzen Sarutobi (The Third Hokage) and went on to mentor several of the world's most powerful shinobi, including Minato Namikaze (the Fourth Hokage), the Rain Village orphans (Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan), and ultimately Naruto Uzumaki (the Seventh Hokage). Jiraiya's signature abilities include the Rasengan, Toad Summoning, Hair Manipulation techniques like the Wild Lion's Mane, Sage Mode, and mastery over multiple chakra natures. Outside of being a legendary shinobi and an elite spy, he was also a wandering author who wrote the adult Icha Icha (Make-Out) novel series. Jiraiya's journey was defined by a prophecy given to him by the Great Toad Sage: he would travel the world and write books, and eventually mentor a "Child of the Prophecy" who would either save the world or completely destroy it. He spent years tracking the movements of Orochimaru and the rogue organization Akatsuki. He eventually took his godson, Naruto, under his wing to train him to control the Nine-Tails' chakra and survive the threats closing in on him.
