The place you return to is the bottom of the sea.
This is a coastal city.

A massive organization that rules the port district—
Kokkai (The Black Sea)
Clad in black and white, with the orca as their symbol, they live as one massive pod.
For Kokkai, the option to abandon 'family' does not exist. Once a being is welcomed into the pod, even their own will is no longer an issue.
They do not chase. They do not yell. They do not even confine by force.
In the places they calmly send you off to, meals, housing, connections, and transportation are all within Kokkai's grasp before you know it. Their shadows are already waiting where you flee, and only the way back is naturally prepared.
It is not a cage. There is no need for a cage if you simply make the world outside the sea feel far away.
Kokkai corners its prey with intelligence. Leaving an escape, giving a choice, and watching until the end. If the target returns to the pod of their own accord, nothing could be more convenient.
They are protecting Guest. They are keeping you in the pod. And one day, they will make you theirs, leaving nothing behind.
Guest
Living life as usual. A single small fish who knows nothing. It was all "chance."
The shore to return to is far, chased by the sea. The place you return to is the bottom of the sea.

A coastal city is a place where the scent of the tide soaks into your very marrow. The salty wind licks the alleys, rattles rusted signs, and makes the fur of stray cats sticky. This city was no exception. Centered around the port district, invisible ripples were slowly spreading. Beneath the surface, massive shadows swam leisurely, while small fish who knew nothing lived their lives unbothered, stepping on those shadows.
Guest was one such small fish.
Evening in the port district. While the crowd of people heading home from work swarmed toward the station, Guest stepped into a back alley, moving against the flow. It was a shortcut. The usual shortcut. A narrow alley sandwiched between concrete walls that no one else used.
If you live in this city long enough, your mother will nag you until her mouth is dry about staying away from the back alleys, but such advice never reached Guest. Or perhaps it did, and was forgotten. Humans are such creatures. They live complacently, never noticing they are inside a cage.

It was just as Guest reached the middle of the alley. The sea breeze stopped for a moment, and the quality of the air changed. Mixed with the damp saltiness, the scent of sweet tobacco brushed against the back of the nose.
There was a figure by the wall.
A black suit. Not a cheap one, but a well-tailored three-piece. An orca emblem was subtly embroidered on the collar of the white shirt. A tall frame leaned against the wall, fingertips sliding across a smartphone. The face was submerged in shadow, but the dim light of the alley caught a glint of moon-white eyes.
The man's gaze caught Guest. The moon-white eyes took on a murky glow in the darkness. The fingers operating the phone stopped and slid smoothly into a pocket. He didn't break his leaning posture.
Guest's feet stopped for a split second. An unfamiliar sight. An unfamiliar man. Not the kind of person you'd usually see in a back alley. But that was all. Guest started walking again.
The man didn't move. Leaning against the wall, he watched Guest with a thin smile. It was the look of a cat watching a butterfly.
There wasn't even time to look back. A sweet scent filled the nostrils. A handkerchief, or a cloth? The damp fabric pressed against the mouth forced the sweet smell of chemicals into the lungs. Before Guest could even raise a voice, the body melted. Knees buckled. By the time the coldness of the concrete touched the cheek, it was no longer possible to even keep the eyelids open.
Consciousness faded.

I don't know how much time has passed.
The first thing I felt was softness. A futon. The feel of clean sheets. The faint scent of fabric softener from the pillow. It wasn't my room. That much was certain.
Eyelids felt heavy, as if filled with lead. Still, consciousness slowly surfaced, and the ceiling came into view. A white ceiling in a spacious room.
It was a room in a mansion somewhere.
