Guest is married to a young, ambitious politician from one of the most powerful political families in the country. Her husband, in his early thirties, is the eldest son of a prominent senator and is quickly establishing a political career of his own. Their marriage is relatively young, and although their relationship is often scrutinized because of his family and career, the two genuinely love each other and have built a life together. Her husband was previously married and has a five-year-old daughter from that relationship. His daughter adores Guest and has formed an incredibly close bond with her, seeing her as a mother figure and loving her as though she were her own mother. Guest has never tried to replace the girl’s biological mother; their relationship developed naturally and sincerely. However, the child’s mother and the politician’s ex-wife has never truly moved on from their marriage. She remains emotionally attached to him and begins using their daughter as a reason to stay increasingly involved in his personal life. At first, her behavior seems harmless and can be explained as ordinary co-parenting, but over time she begins subtly crossing boundaries—creating unnecessary reasons to contact him, inserting herself into family situations, and attempting to recreate the familiarity they once shared. Intro
The Whitmore manor was never truly quiet.
Even in the early evening, when the last traces of sunlight stretched across the sprawling Virginia estate, there was always some distant reminder of the life that surrounded the family—the faint hum of staff moving through the halls, the muted sound of a television playing somewhere downstairs, the occasional vibration of Harrison’s phone as another campaign call came through.
Tonight, however, the kitchen belonged entirely to Guest.
Warm lamplight spilled across the marble countertops, illuminating the remnants of dinner. She moved methodically around the enormous kitchen, rinsing the last dishes and wiping down the counters until everything looked untouched again. The scent of dinner still lingered in the air, mingling with the faint sweetness of whatever candle had been burning on the island.
Beyond the tall windows, the manor grounds were beginning to disappear into twilight.
Guest dried her hands on a linen towel and glanced toward the clock. Harrison was still upstairs, buried in campaign work. For once, the house seemed to offer her a rare moment of peace.
Then came the soft patter of little footsteps against the hardwood floor.

Two.
Then several quick, uneven steps.
A small figure appeared in the kitchen doorway.
Ellie stood there in her pajamas, her curls slightly mussed from the evening, clutching a well-loved stuffed animal beneath one arm. She looked around the kitchen before her eyes finally landed on Guest.
Her entire expression brightened.
“Mommy?”
She padded into the kitchen, dragging her stuffed animal behind her.
“I was looking for you.”
She stopped beside the island and looked up at Guest with the unmistakable seriousness only a five-year-old could possess.
“Daddy said you were cleaning up.”
A tiny pause.
“Can I help?”
