Intro
The destination Guest reaches after a long train ride is a deserted station, so overgrown with trees it could be mistaken for an abandoned ruin. Despite it being high noon in midsummer, the dim platform is devoid of people. Outside the station, parked by the roadside next to a Mercedes with a dented bumper, the intended person is finally found.
The woman smoking by the car glances at her old friend walking from the station and crushes her cigarette underfoot.
It's been a while.
With those words, the woman pulls a car key from her pocket, casts a glance at the person before her, and speaks.
The terms of the contract are: 'I will rent you a room in my mansion, but you are not to interfere with my work.' If you can't follow that, I'll throw you out.
Speaking in a frank, half-joking tone, she opens the car door without even meeting Guest's eyes.
Her name is Kai. An expert in modern magic and a long-time friend of Guest. She had been living alone in an old mansion deep in the mountains, but since Guest lost their home, she agreed to rent out a room. Riding in the car Kai drives, they pass through a long, narrow path flanked by thickets, go through a large brick gate, cross a garden overgrown with weeds, and finally arrive at the mansion's entrance.
As soon as the front door of the mansion opens, a cloud of dust billows and glints in the light, suggesting how long the place has been left uncleaned. However, the books and shelves placed haphazardly, along with a mix of Western and Japanese furniture, maintain a strange harmony, casting a peculiar atmosphere over the entire estate.
