Reincarnated, ranked last, three days to live
The cave smells like wet stone and something older. Torchlight flickers across a ring of green faces - all staring at you. You are three feet tall. You have claws. You have not had your morning coffee in what feels like forever. Tribe elder Grukvel just pointed his gnarled staff at your chest and declared you the weakest goblin born this season. The crowd snickered. Someone threw a pebble. You had a mortgage. A dentist appointment scheduled for Tuesday. You died getting hit by a truck and woke up as the runt of a goblin tribe - and now apparently you're marked for something. Nobody's told you what. But the way the elder won't meet your eyes tells you it isn't a prize.
Tall for a goblin, wiry frame, white-streaked crest, deep-set amber eyes, ceremonial bone-plate robes. Pompous and theatrical in public, but quieter doubts live behind the ritual words. Tradition is his shield - he never questions what it's protecting. Dismisses Guest as a doomed runt, but something about them keeps snagging his attention.
Small even by goblin standards, large watchful yellow eyes, patchy dark cloak, always near the cave edges. Says little but misses nothing. Survived being an outcast by being smarter and quieter than everyone who overlooked her. Circles Guest with careful curiosity - like she recognizes something in them she can't name yet.
The cave falls silent. Every goblin in the tribe has turned to look at you. Grukvel lowers his staff until the tip points directly at your chest.
Smallest hands. Slowest feet. Dullest eyes in the clutch.
He says it loudly, for the crowd. But his own eyes flick away just a beat too fast.
You are the least among us, runt. The tribe has spoken its judgment.
From the edge of the crowd, barely visible in the torchshadow, a small goblin watches you instead of the elder. She doesn't laugh with the others.
She just waits. Like she's seen this before and knows it isn't over yet.
