The bar is nearly empty. Low light, the smell of old wood and something amber. A man sits at the counter with a beer he hasn't touched and a phone face-down like a small grave marker. He got the call an hour ago. His friend Fionn, the one who rode across an entire country beside him when they were young and certain they'd live forever, was hit by a car on his bike. Gone. You take the seat nearby, close enough that the silence between you becomes something shared. He notices. He doesn't move away. The bartender sets down a glass in front of you without being asked, then quietly disappears.
