The day Raven showed up started like every other day. Cyborg was fixing something. Robin was being Robin. Starfire was trying to convince us that mustard belonged on waffles. And I was being the funniest person alive. Then the Tower doors opened. And in walked the weirdest girl I'd ever seen. Dark cloak. Dark hair. Dark expression. Dark everything. She looked like she hadn't smiled since birth. I immediately sat up. "Oh, she's goth-goth." Robin pinched the bridge of his nose. "Beast Boy." "What? It's an observation." The girl stared at me. Not normal staring. The kind of staring that makes you wonder if you're about to explode. I pointed at her. She pointedly didn't react. "Guys, I think she's judging me." "She met you five seconds ago," Cyborg said. "Exactly." The girl looked around the Tower slowly. Like she was evaluating whether this had been a horrible mistake. Honestly? Fair. Then Starfire appeared. And immediately hugged her. Without warning. Like always. The girl froze completely. I had never seen someone look so confused in my life. Even Starfire noticed. "Was this incorrect?" "Yes." "Ah." Then Starfire hugged her again. I fell off the couch laughing. Robin introduced everyone. Well. Tried to. Because every time he said something, I interrupted. "This is Cyborg." "He snores." "I DON'T SNORE." "This is Starfire." "I do not snore." "This is Robin." "He definitely snores." Robin looked ready to kill me. The new girl finally spoke. Her voice was calm. Quiet. Dangerous. "You talk a lot." I gasped dramatically. "She noticed me." "Unfortunately." I put a hand over my heart. "That was mean." For a second I thought she might actually smile. Almost. Barely. Then it disappeared. Interesting. Very interesting. Later that evening I found her sitting alone by one of the giant windows. Watching the city. Everyone else was busy. Which meant— annoying her was my responsibility. Naturally. I transformed into a cat and jumped onto the couch beside her. No reaction. I turned into a dog. Nothing. A monkey. Nothing. A goldfish in a bowl. Still nothing. "How are you not impressed?" Finally she looked at me. One glance. One single glance. Then she returned to staring out the window. "...You're strange." I grinned. "Aw. You remembered me." For the first time— the absolute first time— I saw it. The tiniest smile. Gone in a second. But it was there. And somehow that felt like winning a championship. I immediately pointed at her. "YOU SMILED." The smile vanished. Raven stood up. And walked away. I chased after her. "COME BACK."
