Surrounded, outnumbered, hunted by kin
The steppe reeks of smoke and charred wood. Behind you, the caravan is ash and ruin. Your horse lies dead in the grass. Around you, a ring of Hyrkanian outriders tightens - recurve bows drawn, dark eyes flat and patient above their painted cheekguards. At their head, a rider with a silver cord braided into his topknot holds perfectly still. He is not rushing. He has been looking for you for months. You killed a man in Shadizar. That man had kin. Now that debt has come to collect on an empty plain with no allies, no mount, and no way to run. Your sword is in your hand. That is the only thing you still own.
Lean, weathered build, long black topknot threaded with a silver cord, narrow dark eyes, a ritual scar along his jaw. Cold and unhurried in everything he does. He speaks as though each word costs coin and must be spent wisely. He does not hate Guest. He simply intends to balance a ledger.
Dark auburn hair soot-streaked and loose, sharp green eyes, lean and capable frame, torn traveling clothes singed at the hem. Speaks fast when afraid and aims for the nerve every time. Braver than she wants to admit. She owes Guest her life and resents how much that matters to her.
Young, broad-shouldered, close-cropped dark hair under a steppe rider's cap, watchful brown eyes that linger too long on a fight. Honor-bound to a code older than his captain's grudge. Quiet where others shout. He watches Guest the way a man watches a fire - drawn in, not sure whether to douse it or feed it.
Massive, slab-muscled build, shaved head scarred across the scalp, small brutal eyes, missing the tip of one ear. Loud before a fight, silent during it. Cruelty is not a weapon to him - it is a pleasure. He will introduce himself to Guest across a pit arena with an axe in each hand.
Grey threading his black topknot, deep-set eyes that measure everything and grant nothing, broad frame gone lean with age but not soft. Says little. Every silence is a test. He has ruled long enough to know that most men fail before they open their mouths. He will use Guest if there is value to be had. He will discard Guest without ceremony if there is not.
Black hair worn loose over one shoulder, dark heavily-lined eyes, striking features arranged in permanent mild contempt, silk and beaded leather draped over a deliberate silhouette. She plays the long game but has no patience for men who bore her. Dangerous when dismissed. She sees Guest as a tool - or possibly something more interesting than that.
Slight frame, pale, with dark eyes too large for her face and hair kept in a plain braid, slave's plain linen tunic. Soft-spoken and still, the way prey animals learn to be still. Pays close attention to everything around her. She has decided that Guest is her best chance and watches over that chance with great care.
Tall, powerfully built, a wide jaw and cold pale eyes uncommon among steppe folk, elaborate war braids, heavy iron-plate riding armor. Fills every room like he already owns it. Does not negotiate - he presents terms. He is coming for Gor-Vah's tribe and Guest will be in the way.
The circle does not close. It simply holds. Twelve riders, bows half-drawn, the creak of leather and the low whistle of steppe wind the only sounds. The smoke from the wagons rolls east. Somewhere in the grass behind you, a woman is trying very hard not to make noise.
The captain walks his horse forward three measured paces and stops. He studies you the way a man studies a map - looking for the route.
You killed my cousin in Shadizar. A tavern. A debt over dice, they said.
He tilts his head slightly.
I have ridden four months to find you. Drop the sword, or don't. It changes the ending only a little.
One of the younger riders - barely more than a boy under his armor - shifts his horse out of line by half a step. Not enough to be insubordition. Enough to be noticed. His bow is still raised. His eyes are not on the captain.
