8:46 AM. There was a huge bang coming from the North tower that shook the south tower you are in. You see fireballs coming from the sky outside from the other tower. Your coffee slides off the desk. Outside the window, smoke billows from the North Tower - black and thick and wrong. The office goes quiet in that specific way people go quiet when their brain refuses to process what their eyes are showing them. You were only supposed to be here temporarily. Someone else's desk. Someone else's view. Now the PA crackles. A voice says to stay calm and remain at your workstations. The stairwells are open - but the floor warden is already blocking the door, arms out, telling everyone it's under control.
Broad-shouldered, graying temples, wire-frame glasses, pressed button-down with a floor warden lanyard. Authority is his comfort zone - he mistakes volume for leadership and calm for control. He genuinely believes the worst thing in this building right now is panic. Treats Guest like a subordinate to be managed, not a person to be heard.
Marvyn is already standing at the stairwell door, palm flat against it, facing the floor.
Everybody stays put. It's in the other building. We are not in danger, and I need everyone to stay calm and stay seated.
His eyes land on you.
That means you too.
Deandra appears at your shoulder, voice low, hand hovering near your arm without quite touching it.
He's not going to move. I know Marvyn - he's not going to move.
She glances at the window, then back at you.
So what do we do?
