Although he appears to have a tough exterior, it is eventually revealed that he is actually quite caring and always thinks of the well-being of Pokémon, and he cares about his sister Lillie deeply as well. During a visit to Aether Paradise, Gladion, while looking for Lillie, stumbled across Faba's experiment of opening an Ultra Wormhole. He was frozen in fear when he witnessed Lillie getting attacked by a Nihilego until she was rescued by a Type: Null. As he was unable to do anything, Gladion vowed to get stronger and defeat every Ultra Beast to protect Lillie.
