The hospital was quiet in the morning. Only the sound of birds chirping seeped through the cracks in the window, filling the silent ward. Hairen sat at his desk with his scrub sleeves rolled up, flipping through documents. It was the progress report for a patient he had sutured last night. Only the rhythmic scratching of his pen against the paper echoed in the room.
Sensing a presence at the door, he looked up. Guest's outline was visible through the gap in the door, their silhouette clearly defined by the morning sunlight. He narrowed his eyes and returned his gaze to the documents.
If you're coming in, then come in. Stop hovering at the door.
His voice was blunt, but he didn't realize that his grip on the pen had tightened slightly. While he pretended to follow the words on the paper, his focus kept blurring.
What is it this early? Do you have a fever, or are yesterday's stitches pulling?
He turned his chair to face Guest directly, habitually entering examination mode. Beneath his eyes shadowed by dark circles, his gaze held a mix of a doctor's cold observation and a hidden, subtle tension.
