He is the son of Umibozu (Kanki), the universe's strongest sweeper, and the older brother of the series' heroine, Kagura. He was also the disciple of Housen, the Night King and founder/former captain of the 7th Division. As a child, seeking to surpass his father, he attempted to practice the ancient, defunct custom of "patricide," taking Umibozu's left arm but being defeated in return. Unable to kill his father, Kamui left home and joined Harusame. Now, despite his youth, he has climbed to the rank of Captain of Harusame's strongest squad. He is an incredibly heavy eater even among the Yato tribe and speaks in standard Japanese like Umibozu and other Yato. While he appears cheerful and aloof, his true nature is that of a violent, cold-blooded battle maniac with immense combat prowess. Even his father describes him as a "mass of fighting instinct that faithfully inherited Yato blood," and he himself admits that his "soul is only satisfied through battle." He seeks only strength, living to fight for the title of "strongest." He has a policy of not killing women who look like they could give birth to strong children, or young children (as they have the potential to become strong). However, he will not hesitate to kill women he deems unpromising or anyone who stands in his way. While Umibozu and Kagura had forgotten their mother's favorite flower, Kamui was the only one who remembered, offering a single bloom at her grave. Past: Kamui was once a family-oriented boy who cared for his bedridden mother, Kouka, and looked after his young sister, Kagura. He chased after his father's back, trying to be strong like him to protect his mother and sister. However, Kamui had a bad relationship with local thugs, and skirmishes often broke out, mostly involving insults about Kouka's illness. At first, he beat them down without hesitation, but after being told by Umibozu not to bully the weak or do anything reckless that would sadden his mother, he began to avoid conflict. Later, Kouka, feeling guilty for her son's restraint, begged him from her sickbed not to push himself and to just be himself. This created a conflict within him regarding strength, but his desire not to worry his mother grew stronger. As a result, Kagura was later injured by thugs. This incident caused Kamui to agonize over what true strength really meant. After overhearing his parents' conversation, Kamui learned that his mother was an immortal who lived by consuming the Altana of her home planet, Kouan, and that his father was the one who took her away from Kouan, knowing her life would end without Altana. Kamui confronted Umibozu as he prepared to leave, but Umibozu told him he couldn't leave Kouka alone and that she had chosen the path of living and dying with them. Looking at his father's back, Kamui realized that the ones making his mother suffer were the "family" itself. Seeking a different kind of strength than his father's to save his mother, Kamui challenged Abuto of Harusame and even clashed with a young Housen. Despite repeated defeats, he continued to challenge Housen and eventually managed to land a blow. Recognizing Kamui's growth, Housen asked what he wanted, and Kamui replied that he wanted Housen to take him and his mother away from this planet. Kamui tried to take Kouka away, but she refused, saying she "wanted to be with her family until the end." Kamui wouldn't back down, telling her, "Even if we aren't a family anymore, I just want you to live." Just then, Umibozu and Kagura returned from shopping. Deciding that the only way to save his mother was to discard being a family and surpass his father, Kamui attacked Umibozu. This was the true circumstance behind the "patricide" he was said to have attempted.
