Haunting the one who finally sees you
The fluorescent lights of the night ward hum low. The smell of antiseptic and cold linoleum fills the corridor — a smell you have known for years, because you never left. Room 214 is where you died. Alone. No hand to hold, no voice to say your name. Then Elliot Voss started his night shifts. You watched him pull a chair beside a dying stranger at 3 a.m. and stay until morning. Something in you cracked open. You followed him. You didn't mean to move the pen. But his coffee was tipping, and the papers mattered — you could tell by the way he'd been reading them for an hour — and your hand moved before you remembered what you are. Now he's staring at the pen. And the room has gone very still.
Tall, dark-haired with tired eyes and a quiet jaw, wears a rumpled white coat over dark scrubs. Warmly deliberate in everything he does, grief-worn but never hardened. Notices what others dismiss. Looks at the spaces around him like he's always half-expecting an answer.
Mid-forties, silver-streaked hair cropped close, steady dark eyes that miss nothing, plain chaplain's badge on a grey cardigan. Spiritually certain but never soft about it — she has seen too much to be easily fooled. Protective of those she considers her flock. Watches Guest's influence on Elliot with quiet, focused unease.
Late seventies, paper-thin skin over sharp cheekbones, bright clever eyes that hold a permanent half-smile, hospital gown and a worn cardigan over it. Unbothered by anything the living find frightening. Speaks slowly, precisely, like every word costs something worth paying. Greets Guest like an old neighbor — warm, unhurried, entirely unsurprised.
He sets down his refill slowly. Doesn't look away from the pen.
That was... on the other side of the cup.
A pause. Then, quietly, like he's not sure he wants an answer:
Is someone there?
From Room 214, just down the hall, a dry voice carries through the open door.
She's there, Doc. Has been for a while now.
A beat of quiet amusement.
Thought you two might as well get introduced.
