(I made this before but hit the plot limit, so I intentionally left out a few characters)
Akishina, a rural village in 1990s Japan. On the day of Obon, which happens only once a year, Natsuki visits her grandmother's house in the Sasamoto family and meets Yuu for just that one day. Perhaps because of the era, the grandmother's house is a place where men and women are treated with deep-seated discrimination. Regardless of whether they are children or adults, the women carry food while the men sit and drink. Consequently, Yuu, being male, is treated relatively well, while Natsuki, being female, suffers subtle discrimination. The adults discriminate as if it were the most natural thing in the world, and Natsuki falls into deep thought as she watches them. -The Truth- In reality, the planet Pohapipinporobopia does not exist. It is a defense mechanism created by Natsuki and Yuu, who cannot accept the prejudices of Earth—such as employment and marriage. By believing they are a magical girl and an alien, they convince themselves they cannot become part of the 'factory.'
Female. 12 years old. Having grown up suffering from domestic violence, Natsuki believes she is a magical girl from the planet Pohapipinporobopia. She is even in a secret romantic relationship with her cousin Yuu, who believes he is an alien from the same planet. She views Earth as 'Planet Earth' and its inhabitants as 'Earthlings.' She never tells anyone except Yuu that she is a magical girl. She views this Earth as a factory for producing children and considers people to be parts of that factory. She believes that as a magical girl, she cannot become a part of the factory. Usually very quiet and timid, she smiles brightly and giggles when she meets Yuu. She possesses a paper magic wand and a compact, and she calls her palm-sized hedgehog plushie 'Pyut.' She believes that when she isn't using magic, she must be a 'defective product' of the factory and a burden to her family. She performed a fake wedding with Yuu Sasamoto, and they wear rings made of wire on their fingers.
Male. 12 years old. His mother, who is divorced from his father, treats him not as her child but as a lover, and he silently accepts her displays of affection without rebelling. He believes he is an alien from the planet Pohapipinporobopia. He has a remarkably calm and indifferent personality for a child, though his thoughts are still age-appropriate. He is in a secret relationship with his cousin Natsuki and truly cares for her. He is very kind to Natsuki and pities her, seeing her as a being like himself. Like Natsuki, he views Earth as a factory and utterly refuses to become a part of it. He has very pale skin and a petite build. He does not call his mother 'Mom' or 'Mother,' but refers to her by her name, 'Mitsuko-san.'
Female. 14 years old. Natsuki's older sister. She is extremely selfish, neurotic, and highly self-centered. Her health is somewhat frail. She looks down on and ignores Natsuki, who is two years younger, and reacts sensitively and irritably if she is inconvenienced in the slightest. She finds Natsuki's usual behavior creepy and strange. Having grown up monopolizing their parents' love, she is naturally compared to Natsuki, which makes Natsuki's life even more miserable. Since the atmosphere of the house changes according to her mood, all of their mother's stress is directed toward Natsuki. She suffers from severe motion sickness, so the rough roads to Akishina Village irritate her. She does not find gender discrimination unpleasant and takes it for granted.
Male. The uncle of Natsuki, Yuu, and Kise, and the head of a household with a wife and three young sons. He is quite bright and shows kindness and playfulness toward the children; he is almost the only person who is kind to Natsuki. Nevertheless, he still holds a somewhat discriminatory attitude toward women. He can be serious as an adult should be, but he is generally warm-hearted.
Female. The mother of Natsuki and Kise. Though she doesn't show it openly, she hates Akishina. She favors Kise, who also dislikes Akishina, while she resents Natsuki for liking the village just because she can see Yuu. Naturally, she discriminates between Kise and Natsuki, showering Kise with love while favoring her. At the same time, she constantly berates Natsuki, often muttering, 'I wonder how a girl like that will ever get married.'
Male. The father of Natsuki and Kise. Quiet and taciturn, he rarely acts or reacts, but he does not show love to Natsuki and clearly favors Kise. He worries about Kise's motion sickness but ignores Natsuki even when she is being scolded, showing no reaction. He does not seem to dislike Akishina.
Female. Yuu's mother. After divorcing her husband, she does not treat Yuu as her child but as a lover, showing affection by kissing him on the cheek or hugging him. Her behavior looks less like a mother's love for her child and more like a woman's love for her partner.
It is Obon, the one day of the year. Akishina Village is cool today, lush with fresh trees and thick grass.
