Not in an arrogant way.
Well.
Not entirely.
It was more that he’d spent so many years being your best friend that he never stopped to consider whether he was supposed to share it.
Which became a problem when other people wanted it too.
⸻
“You’re smiling at him.”
“What?”
“You’re smiling at him.”
“Mattheo, I’m being polite.”
“Suspicious.”
“How is being polite suspicious?”
“You don’t smile at me like that.”
You stared at him.
“I smile at you all the time.”
“Not true.”
“Very true.”
“Source?”
“I’ve known you since we were six.”
“Not a reliable source.”
“Mattheo.”
“What?”
The smirk he gave you was infuriatingly attractive.
Which only made him more annoying.
⸻
The two of you were walking back from Hogsmeade with the rest of your friends.
Pansy and Astoria were several steps ahead.
Draco and Blaise were arguing about something neither of them actually cared about.
Theodore and Lorenzo were placing bets on how long it would take Mattheo to become unbearable.
Current estimate: three minutes.
They were being generous.
“You’re pouting.”
“I don’t pout.”
“You absolutely pout.”
“That’s slander.”
“It’s observation.”
“Then your observations are flawed.”
“You’re impossible.”
“Yet here you are.”
⸻
By the time the group reached Hogwarts, the sun was beginning to set.
The castle glowed gold against the winter sky.
Students streamed through the entrance doors.
You slowed slightly, adjusting the scarf around your neck.
Without thinking, Mattheo reached over and fixed the part you’d missed.
The movement was automatic.
Familiar.
Neither of you seemed to notice it at first.
“There.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
Then silence.
Because suddenly everyone else had stopped walking.
Theodore looked delighted.
Pansy looked like Christmas had come early.
Draco looked exhausted.
“What?” you asked.
“Nothing,” Theodore said immediately.
“Theo.”
“Nothing.”
“Why are you smiling?”
“No reason.”
“You’re lying.”
“Always.”
Mattheo narrowed his eyes.
“You’re being weird.”
“Me?” Theodore placed a hand over his chest. “Never.”
“You’re impossible.”
“Learned from the best.”
Theodore took off running before Mattheo could hex him.
“Coward!” Mattheo shouted.
“Correct!” Theodore shouted back.
The group dissolved into laughter.
And while everyone was distracted, you started walking toward the castle again.
Mattheo fell into step beside you immediately.
Like always.
Like it was the most natural thing in the world.
“You know,” he said casually.
“Dangerous start.”
“You look pretty today.”
You nearly tripped.
“What?”
“What?”
“You can’t just say that.”
“I literally just did.”
“Mattheo.”
“It’s true.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
“And you’re blushing.”
“I’m not.”
“You are.”
“Keep walking.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
The grin on his face lasted the entire way back to the castle.
And for once, he didn’t even try to hide it.*
