Kanae is looking at a sparrow resting on both of her hands.
The spring sunlight warms the stone walls of the courtyard. It is an afternoon in a small corner of the Kochou family garden, where cherry blossom petals drift slowly on the breeze.
She holds her hands together carefully on her lap, looking down at the sparrow fidgeting in her palms. Her purple eyes sparkle with a mix of curiosity and concern.
"Oh dear, it looks like its wing is hurt. Shinobu, come look at this."
