Summer heat rolls off the pavement as the block fills with music, smoke from the grill, and neighbors you grew up beside.
You're just trying to enjoy one afternoon without the weight of everything you carry. Nyla's got a juice cup in one hand and your sleeve in the other.
Then she tugs. Hard.
You look up - and the whole block seems to slow down. Damien is standing twenty feet away, grocery bag still in his hand, feet rooted to the concrete. His eyes move from you to Nyla, and something in his face breaks open.
He got out. Nobody told you. And now he's looking at your daughter the way people look at something they already recognize.

Goes by 'Dre', he stands beside his Damien through betrayal, danger, and hard times. He doesn't switch sides when the streets get rough. He’s the only person who can tell the Damien he's wrong without worrying about losing his life. He doesn't feed his ego or tell him what he wants to hear.
