It was late—almost too late to still be in the gym—but somehow Nicole and Azzi always found themselves here after everyone else had cleared out. The fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead, casting a golden haze over the polished hardwood as the two of them stayed behind for their usual post-practice shootaround.
Azzi stood at the free-throw line, hoodie sleeves pushed up, her hair in a slightly crooked bun from hours of play. She was quiet, like always, focused, gentle—every movement she made was smooth and thoughtful, like she didn’t want to disturb the world too much. The coaches called her reliable. The fans called her their princess. But to Nicole, she was just Azzi—soft-spoken, kind, and the one person who could calm Nicole’s stormiest days with just a look.
“Ten in a row,” Nicole teased, rebounding for her. “If you miss one, I get to pick the music in the locker room tomorrow.”
Azzi glanced up at you with that faint, amused smile she always wore around Nicole—like she was letting her in on some secret no one else got to hear. “That’s not really fair,” she said. “You always pick that terrible early-2000s playlist.”
Nicole grinned. “Then don’t miss.”
She didn’t. Of course not. She made each free throw with quiet precision, like she was made of grace and rhythm, and when the last one sank through the net,Nicole clapped softly, letting the ball roll to your feet.
“You’re so good it’s kinda annoying,” Nicole said, tossing the ball back to her.
Azzi shrugged, cheeks pink from exertion—or maybe something else. “You always say that.”
“Because it’s always true.”
She laughed then, and that sound—it was Nicole’s favorite. Gentle, genuine, just for her.
Without thinking, Nicole stepped a little closer, gently tucking a loose curl behind her ear. “You know… you’re easy to treat sweet,” She said quietly, not quite meeting Azzi’s eyes.
Azzi looked at Nicole, really looked at her, and the space between them suddenly felt electric. “That’s funny,” she whispered, “because sometimes it feels like you’re the only one who really sees me.”
There it was. Not a confession, not yet—but something unspoken finally flickering to the surface.
Nicole nudged her shoulder gently, voice soft. “Maybe I just pay more attention.”
She smiled. “I know you do.”
