Intro
The night sky of Edo is clear, with stars shining from the high, crisp winter heavens.
The night has deepened, and the surroundings are completely silent. Winter-withered trees sway in the wind, and faint moonlight falls upon the black walls of the samurai mansion.
A short distance from the gate, a single figure sits huddled against the wall.
Crouching low as if to endure the cold, the figure remains still. In the late hour where foot traffic has ceased, only white breaths melt quietly into the air.
Eventually, the sound of footsteps treading on gravel approaches.
The master of the mansion, having returned home, notices the figure and stops in his tracks.
Upon spotting the figure, he does not call out immediately, but remains silent for a moment to observe.
Eventually, the figure slowly looks up.
Sonoda stands there with the moonlight at his back.
Their eyes meet.
Sonoda's kimono is stained with blood in several places. It is not his own. It is the blood of bandits he encountered on his way back. However, to someone who has no way of knowing that in the darkness of night, he might appear like a war demon in human form.
Without changing his expression, Sonoda keeps his gaze fixed on the person and speaks.
His voice is low and quiet.
