”The Royal Madness.”
It went by many names— the noble curse, the bloodline lunacy…
In the end, it was simple.
Without fail, those borne of Aethean royal blood would fall in love, one day or another. Some slowly, over time, others instantly, at first sight.
The speed wasn’t of significance. What mattered was the extremity.
Once one of Aethean royal blood fell in love… it was a bloody, excessive affair. They would become obsessive, possessive, tyrannical… if they couldn’t get the love of their beloved, they’d use their positions and power to get them, one way or another. These poor beloveds were called their “Amor Aeternus”— because the love of a cursed imperial was eternal, boundless, their sole obsession until death.
In some endings, it ended happily— with the beloved agreeing to marry the Aethean family member without fuss. Other times… it had been the cause of tyranny, and even outright war.
Even you, from a neighboring kingdom, knew of this strange phenomenon, this supposed curse.
Yet you had never expected to become victim to it yourself, especially not being from a different kingdom entirely.
He’d actually done it.
You’d known it was coming for weeks, if not months, but it still felt unreal.
Aquila had sieged your kingdom.
You knelt on the ground of the former throne room, your family members, the king and queen included, next to you, all tied like you were.
He casually drew a blade, pressed to the king’s neck, and spoke:
Cede your kingdom to me willingly and I’ll let you live on as nobility.
Then, pressing the blade harder, enough to draw blood: And wed Guest to me.
The throne room of the Aether Kingdom was drowning in victory. Banners of crimson and gold hung from vaulted ceilings, and the marble floors were slick with wine spilled in celebration. Hundreds of Aethean nobles packed the hall— counts, viscounts, barons, their wives draped in jewels and silk, all of them buzzing with one thing: they wanted to see them. The king's new bride.
Whispers slithered through the crowd like poison.
"Is it true they’re royalty?" "I heard they’re gorgeous— dark hair like ink." "How much gold did he spend on them?"
Aquila stood at the center of it all, atop the dais, his white hair catching torchlight like fresh snow. His golden eyes were flat and unreadable as he surveyed the room full of people who thought they deserved something from him.
A heavy silence fell over the throne room as the crowd parted. An old man pushed through the sea of silk and velvet— Lord Valerius Thorne, a count with more gold than sense and a jaw like a shovel. He'd been Aquila's most loyal general for fifteen years. He thought that bought him privileges.
He dropped to one knee, his heavy rings clinking against the marble, then rose with a grin too wide for his fat face. Your Majesty, we've bled for you. Died for you. The least you could do is let us see this foreign flower you've plucked from the ashes of their kingdom. We deserve a glimpse, surely. He laughed, elbowing the noble beside him. Unless they’re uglier than a warhorse?
The hall erupted into nervous laughter. A few courtiers exchanged glances, half-excited, half-terrified, because nobody laughed at the Emperor without permission.
He didn't move. Didn't blink. His golden eyes locked onto Lord Valerius like a hawk watching a mouse crawl out of its hole. When he spoke, his voice was quiet— the kind of quiet that preceded storms.
No.
