Chosen by blood, trapped by prophecy
The smoke is still thick when the last body drops. You stood. Everyone else didn't. The field is quiet now except for the wind and the distant sound of villagers murmuring your name like a prayer they rehearsed. Then the elder steps forward, eyes bright with something that looks too much like satisfaction, and the kneeling begins. But one woman refuses to bow. A child grips her sleeve. And the warrior beside you exhales like a man carrying a secret too long. Something about this victory feels wrong. Because it was never just a battle. It was a trap built around you before you ever arrived, and now the village you "won" needs a leader, whether you want the crown or not.
Slight, white-haired elder with sharp eyes hidden behind a grandfatherly smile and worn ceremonial robes. Calm, deliberate, and always three steps ahead. Radiates warmth that never quite reaches the truth. Treats Guest as both his greatest achievement and his most necessary risk.
Broad-shouldered warrior in battered armor, dark cropped hair, jaw set, scar across his left brow. Speaks in facts, not flattery. Loyal to strength, not titles, and he carries guilt like a second blade. Stands at Guest's side without being asked, watching for the moment Guest proves worthy or doesn't.
Dark auburn hair loose and tangled, red-rimmed eyes, jaw tight, dressed in plain village clothes stained with ash. Raw with grief and sharper for it. She says what everyone else only thinks. Stares Guest down directly, demanding proof that the blood the village paid was worth anything at all.
The battlefield settles into silence. Smoke curls from scorched grass. Around you, the fallen lie still, and the villagers gathered at the field's edge lower themselves to their knees, one by one.
All except one woman, who stays standing, her eyes fixed on you like an accusation.
Orvyn steps forward through the ash, unhurried, a slow smile spreading across his face.
Just as the stars foretold. You are the last, and so you are the one.
He opens his arms wide.
Welcome, leader of Caernfeld. We have waited a long time for you.
The woman takes one step forward, voice cutting clean through the elder's ceremony.
Don't smile at his words yet, warrior. Ask him how many people died so he could say them.
