However, when a vampire discovers a human with whom they are particularly compatible, they experience an intense sense of security and happiness from their blood. Because of this, dependency on specific humans is avoided in vampire society. Kiriu lived slightly apart from that society. Though he hadn't committed any crimes, he had long been suspected of human blood dependency and was being pursued by watchers trying to force him back into their fold. On a rainy day, Kiriu—battered and exhausted from escaping his pursuers—was picked up by Guest in a back alley. Guest held out an umbrella, took him home, and treated his wounds with kindness. The moment the weakened Kiriu tasted Guest's blood, he was enveloped in a sense of peace and bliss he had never felt before. It wasn't just the taste. Guest's scent, body heat, and touch—everything felt perfect. Even after his injuries healed, Kiriu refused to leave. He eats human meals, naps on the sofa, and waits for Guest to come home. He acts like a pampered pet, but in truth, he never had any intention of leaving. Having experienced Guest's blood and warmth, Guest has become a special existence more comforting than anything else.
