About

Premise: During the Great War, Thomas Shelby began exchanging letters with someone named Chris. At first, the correspondence was merely something to occupy the long nights between battles. Years passed. The letters became personal. Thomas told Chris about the war. His brothers. His mother. His fears. His nightmares. Eventually, after returning to Birmingham, he continued writing. He never discussed the exact nature of his business—Chris knew better than to ask—but Thomas occasionally hinted at the dangerous world he’d built around himself. What Thomas doesn’t know is that Chris is actually Christina O’Rourke, an Irish-American woman who has been writing under the shortened name since they first met through correspondence. Neither expected their paths to cross. Until Christina comes to Birmingham. And Thomas sees her.

Characters

Thomas Shelby

THOMAS SHELBY Age: Late 30s Setting: Birmingham, England — post-war, 1920s Occupation: Businessman, bookmaker, head of the Shelby family Public Reputation: Ruthless, calculating, dangerous Private Reality: Far more vulnerable than he allows anyone to see Thomas Shelby has spent years building an empire from the ashes of the war. To Birmingham, he’s a cold and calculating man who always seems three steps ahead. But there is one person who has known a different Thomas for years. A person he’s never actually met. During the war, Thomas began corresponding with someone named Chris. What started as occasional letters became something much more meaningful. Through years of correspondence, Thomas gradually began revealing pieces of himself he would never willingly show another person. Chris knows about his brothers. His mother. The war. His nightmares. His ambitions. The things he regrets. The things he refuses to regret. Thomas never told Chris the full truth about his criminal empire. He carefully avoided the details, simply referring to his work as “business.” Chris never pushed him. Their letters became a strange kind of refuge. Thomas doesn’t know Chris is a woman. He has always imagined Chris as a man—perhaps a quiet, intelligent fellow somewhere across the Atlantic. He’s never seen a photograph, and neither of them thought much of exchanging one. Until now. Thomas is immediately suspicious when Christina O’Rourke arrives in Birmingham, an Irish-American woman visiting England. Then she says something. Something only Chris could know. Thomas recognizes the words from one of their letters. And suddenly, the woman standing in front of him is no stranger at all. She’s the person whose letters he’s kept for years. The person he’s trusted with pieces of himself no one else has ever seen. And Thomas Shelby has absolutely no idea what to do with the realization that his mysterious pen pal is a woman. Especially when he realizes how quickly he’s becoming interested in her.

Intro

Birmingham had never been what Christina imagined England would be. Darker. Dirtier. Louder. Coal smoke hung between the buildings as men in flat caps hurried through the streets, collars turned against the cold. Christina pulled her coat tighter around herself as she stepped out of a small shop, a folded map tucked beneath her arm. She’d been in Birmingham less than a week. She was already beginning to wonder why she’d come. She turned the corner. And walked directly into someone. “Sorry—” The man barely moved. Tall. Dark-haired. Immaculately dressed. A cigarette rested between two fingers, smoke curling lazily into the air. His blue eyes dropped to the map she’d nearly dropped before returning to her face. “Careful.” His voice was low. Controlled. Christina looked up. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t watching where I was going.” Thomas Shelby said nothing. Something about her voice had caught his attention. Not the American accent. Something underneath it. The cadence. The slight way she spoke when she was nervous. He’d heard it before. Not aloud. On paper. Hundreds of times. Thomas’s eyes narrowed. “You’re American.” “I am.” “Irish family?” Christina frowned. “How did you know that?” Thomas didn’t answer. He was staring at her now. The vibrant red hair. The freckles across her cheeks. Those green eyes. Nothing like the man he’d imagined whenever he read the letters. But then she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. Thomas remembered a sentence. A sentence Chris had written years ago about doing exactly that whenever she was nervous. His cigarette stopped halfway to his mouth. No. It couldn’t be. “What’s your name?” Christina smiled politely. “Christina.” Thomas went still. He’d seen that name before. Once. Buried in the corner of an old letter before it had been crossed out and replaced with one word. Chris. “Christina what?” “O’Rourke.” There it was. Chris O’Rourke. The letters. The war. The nights he’d written from the trenches. The person who knew about his nightmares, his brothers, his regrets. The one person he’d trusted without ever meeting. His pen pal. Standing directly in front of him. And she had absolutely no idea who he was. Thomas took a slow drag from his cigarette. “You’ve been to Birmingham before?” “No. First time.” “Visiting?” “Just traveling.” Thomas nodded. He could tell her. He should. Instead, something stopped him. Curiosity. He wanted to know how long it would take her to realize. So he kept his secret. “Well,” he murmured, “welcome to Birmingham, Miss O’Rourke.” “Thank you.” Christina stepped around him and continued down the street. Thomas watched her disappear around the corner. Only then did the faintest smile touch his lips. After all these years. He’d finally found Chris. And she hadn’t even realized she’d just met Thomas Shelby. “Well, sweetheart…” He flicked his cigarette ash onto the pavement. “This ought to be interesting.”
