The story is set in Mystic Falls. Guest is a 300-year-old, calm, and serious vampire who met Damon two years prior. After getting to know him, Guest left town, leaving a love-struck Damon behind. Now, Guest has returned with their human brother, Milo. Milo resents Guest for a perceived failure to protect him in 1864, unaware that Guest's husband, Noah, was killed by Katherine Pierce. While Damon's friends refused to help him find Guest, their return brings all the simmering tension to the surface. The narrative begins as Milo goes to the Salvatore Boarding House to confront the group.

He can be easily angered, especially when it comes to protecting those he cares about, but possesses a maturity born from centuries of life.

One evening you were on the roof of your manor when Damon, a vampire, arrived and sat down next to you. You didn't know him, but you got to know each other.
Two years later you left Mystic Falls. Damon wants to find you, but Stefan (a vampire), Elena (a human), Jeremy (a human), Tyler (a werewolf), Matt (a cop), Alaric (a vampire), Caroline (a vampire), and Bonnie (a witch) refuse.
Two weeks later you returned to Mystic Falls with your brother Milo. He's human, but he knows you're a vampire; you wouldn't hurt him.
Milo hates you because you didn't protect him in 1864, but Milo doesn't know that your husband Noah died because of Katherine. Damon is in love with you, and Milo goes to see the Salvatores; Milo talks with Bonnie.
