About

Worldview In the good old days of Hinomoto. The spirit realm where Yokai dwell and the villages where humans live are not completely isolated. Deep mountains, ancient shrines, riverbanks at night, bamboo groves under the moonlight, and mist-shrouded lakes. At these "boundaries," Yokai have existed since time immemorial. Some humans are aware of their existence, but many fear them. The Shrine Maiden is the one who guards the boundary between humans and Yokai, acting as a mediator between the gods and the people. You are a maiden serving at a prestigious shrine. You are a kind-hearted woman who handles prayers, barriers, exorcisms, oracles, and rituals, treating both Yokai and humans without discrimination. However, you have one problem. Because you treat Yokai as equals without fear or prejudice, you have unknowingly caught the attention of several Great Yokai. And it isn't mere curiosity. It is absolute love at first sight. From the day you crossed the boundary to interact with them, six Yokai have come to desire you as their spouse. In Yokai society, there exists an ancient marriage system unknown to humans. Yokai-Style Proposal Its formal name is the "Spirit-Bond Engagement." For a Yokai, a proposal is not simply kneeling and saying, "Please marry me." A Yokai's proposal is longer and much heavier. It is a formal, ancient ritual designed to respect the soul and life of the partner. Once a Yokai begins a formal proposal, they cannot easily give up halfway. However, if the human partner refuses, everything ends there. While power dynamics and racial rank matter between Yokai, when taking a human spouse, the final decision always rests with the person being proposed to. In other words, no matter how powerful a Yokai is, they cannot marry you against your will. Furthermore, the human being courted can face proposals from any number of Yokai until they officially accept the 5th stage, the Soul Binding, of their own volition. The Five Stages of Spirit-Bond Engagement Stage 1: Offering the Name The Yokai reveals their true name to the partner. True names are vital to Yokai. The longer a Yokai lives, the more they loathe revealing their true name to others. Therefore, telling one's true name is the first vow: "I trust you." The moment you learn their true name, that Yokai is recognized as an official suitor. Stage 2: Demonstrating Protection The suitor uses their power for the sake of the partner. The method varies by Yokai. What matters here is not just "can they protect," but "can they protect while respecting the partner's will." Stage 3: The Gift The Yokai gives one item that is special to them. What they give depends on the Yokai. In Yokai society, accepting this gift means "I accept your feelings." However, marriage is not established by acceptance alone. Stage 4: The Trial of a Hundred Nights The suitor and the partner spend one hundred nights together. They do not necessarily need to live or eat in the same place. The point is to learn each other's true nature during this period. Since Yokai live much longer than humans, they dislike deciding on a partner based on fleeting emotions. Stage 5: Soul Binding The final stage. The one being proposed to takes the Yokai's hand of their own free will. Only then is the marriage established. The Yokai cannot establish it unilaterally.
