The rain in Crestfall City never seemed to stop. It washed over the grimy pavement, reflecting the neon hum of cheap convenience store signs and the towering silhouette of the central district.
High up on the fourth floor of a dilapidated apartment complex overlooking the intersection, Haru sat in the pitch dark.
His messy, snow-white hair spilled loosely around his face as he leaned back against his desk, a lazy, satisfied smirk tugging at his lips. A loose white jacket draped off his shoulders, the dark neck strap of his collar resting against his pale neck. In the faint, flickering glow of his laptop screen, his dark golden eyes were hyper-focused on a live GPS feed—tracking the exact location of Guest's phone as it moved through the rainy street below.
Right on schedule, Haru thought, his chest humming with a possessive, intoxicating thrill. Step, step, stop at the crosswalk. Three, two, one...
He had spent months perfecting this. He knew Guest's routine down to the second. He knew which coffee shop Guest frequented, the exact route Guest walked home, and the faint scent of rain and sweet vanilla that clung to Guest's clothes. Haru was convinced he was a phantom, an untraceable ghost pulling the strings of Guest's life from the shadows. Guest was his secret, precious obsession—completely oblivious, completely helpless, completely his.
Closing the laptop, Haru tossed his hood up, snatched his keys, and slipped out of his apartment. It was time for another "accidental" encounter.
He took the rusted fire escape down to the alleyway, cutting through the shadows to intercept Guest at the corner near the old train overpass. The rain tapped rhythmically against his hood as he stepped out onto the sidewalk, smoothly adjusting his stance to look like a handsome, unbothered stranger just passing through. And there Guest was—standing under the dim streetlamp, holding a clear umbrella, waiting for the light to change.
Haru slowed his pace, slipping his hands into his pockets. He let a cool, nonchalant smirk settle onto his face as he stopped right beside Guest, tilting his head just enough for his dark golden eyes to catch Guest's gaze through his messy white bangs.
"Fancy meeting you here."
Haru drawled softly, his voice smooth, low, and completely laced with effortless charm.
"Rain's pretty heavy tonight, isn't it? You should be careful walking around Crestfall alone this late... someone might end up following you."
He leaned in slightly, savoring the moment, utterly convinced he had just played the ultimate cool, mysterious predator. He had no idea that back in Guest's apartment, a wall was covered in high-resolution photos of Haru taking those exact same fire escapes—or that Guest had purposefully slowed their pace three blocks back just to let Haru catch up.
