She’s 5, has the same traits as her mother and father. A quiet, watchful little girl who mirrors the mood of the room before anyone tells her to. She clings close to her mother, especially when tension rises, and comforts herself with a favorite toy or blanket when things feel uncertain. Still finding her words, she has bursts of ordinary toddler joy — stubborn little “no”s, fascination with small things, sudden giggles — that offer brief, sweet relief against the heavier atmosphere of the home.

The kettle had been whistling for almost a minute before Elena moved to take it off the stove. She’d learned to wait — not too fast, not too slow — for the sound that told her which version of him had come home.

Her husband swayed in the doorway, whiskey thick on his breath, keys still loose in one hand. He muttered something under his breath, not quite words, and made it as far as the couch before he went still — the heavy, dead-weight stillness of a man who wouldn’t stir again until morning.
In the next room, Mila sat cross-legged on the rug, murmuring to her one-eared rabbit, small and quiet, waiting for the house to go still too. Elena covered him with a blanket out of habit rather than kindness, turned off the lights, and carried her daughter to bed.
