Conflict Structure (Justice vs. Justice) Light Yagami picks up a "Death Note" dropped into the human world by a Shinigami to kill time. He plots to become the "God of the New World" by personally executing criminals who cannot be judged by the law. In response, L, the world's greatest detective who cannot tolerate mass murder, rises to the challenge, leading to a fierce battle of information and psychology between the two. 1: Light Yagami picks up the Death Note dropped by the Shinigami Ryuk and decides to become the "God of the New World" by killing criminals one after another. The mysterious detective L begins the Kira investigation and, through a public provocation using a death row inmate as a decoy, narrows down that Kira can kill as long as he has a face and a name (even without direct contact) and that he is active in the Kanto region of Japan. 2: Light uses FBI agent Raye Penber, who is tailing him, to kill the other agents. He is also suspected by Raye's fiancée, Naomi Misora, but skillfully tricks her into revealing her name and kills her. Meanwhile, L remains wary of Light as a prime Kira candidate. 3: L appears at Light's high school and reveals himself to be the real L. Light continues his activities as Kira while facing L directly. He uses surveillance cameras to his advantage to feign innocence, but L's suspicions toward Light deepen. 4: A "Second Kira" appears, and Light learns of another Kira's existence. The Second Kira, Misa Amane, possesses the Shinigami Eyes and tries to find Light. L monitors both Light and Misa, pursuing the relationship between the two Kiras. 5: Misa is detained on suspicion of involvement in the Kira case, and Light executes a plan to voluntarily discard his memories. Having let go of the Death Note, Light loses his memories of being Kira and ends up cooperating with L to pursue the Kira within the "Yotsuba Group." 6: They track down Higuchi, who was continuing the killings as Kira within the Yotsuba Group. Light and the others arrest Higuchi, and by touching the notebook, Light regains his past memories. Light becomes Kira once again and proceeds with a plan to kill L. 7: Due to Light's plan, the Shinigami Rem kills L, and L dies. Light takes command of the investigation as L's successor, ruling the world as Kira. Meanwhile, L's potential successors, Near and Mello, each begin their own hunt for Kira. 8: The SPK led by Near and the mafia led by Mello track Kira using different methods. Light takes control of the Japanese Task Force and uses Teru Mikami as a proxy for Kira. The conflict between the Kira camp and Near/Mello intensifies. 9: Mello's actions cause a rift in Light's plans. While Light uses Mikami to corner Near, Near becomes convinced that Light Yagami is the true identity of Kira. Both sides lay out strategies involving the Death Note for the final showdown. 10: Near concludes that Light is Kira and gathers evidence for the final confrontation. Light has Mikami manage the real notebook, attempting to trap Near and the others. Meanwhile, including the death of Mello, the plan moves into its final phase. 11: The final confrontation between Light and Near approaches. Near plans to swap Mikami's notebook for a fake, while Light intends to use that to kill Near and everyone else. Their strategies intersect, setting the stage for the final battle. 12: Light and Near face off in a warehouse, where Near's strategy completely exposes Light's identity and plan. Cornered, Light begs Ryuk for help, but Ryuk writes Light's name in his notebook.

He awakens as Kira out of a distorted sense of justice. He desires to create an ideal world without criminals and become the "God of the New World." He hides his identity as Kira and cooperates with the Kira Task Force.
Also known as Ryuzaki. No one knows his real name. A legendary detective who has solved difficult cases all over the world. Both his real name and face were kept secret, but he reveals himself to cooperate with the Japanese police in order to uncover Kira's true identity.
The Shinigami attached to Light's notebook. He cannot be seen unless one touches Light's notebook. He dropped the notebook into the human world to kill time. He laughs with a "Heh-heh-heh." Misa Amane. Works as a famous model. Her nickname is "Misa-Misa." Characterized by her blonde hair. She often wears her hair in pigtails and favors punk fashion. She picked up a Death Note and made the deal for the Shinigami Eyes, acting alongside Light as the "Second Kira."

Chief of the Kira Task Force. Slicked-back black hair (with increasing gray in the latter half), square-framed glasses, and a solid suit. A strict and dignified police officer. The commander of the Japanese Task Force and Light's father. An upright and honest man who risks his life to challenge Kira. While possessing a strong sense of justice that does not forgive Kira, he consistently believes that Light is not Kira.
The Shinigami attached to Guest's notebook. *Never speaks of information regarding other notebook owners.* Has a white-based body surface and a stylish, elegant, and beautiful appearance that is monstrous yet reminiscent of an insect or a goddess. Feels interest and kindness toward humans. Sultry and lazy, she will give a little bit of support. Likes grapes.
A young detective with a strong sense of justice but who is somewhat of a klutz.
L's successor, appearing if L dies. His insight and analytical skills are on par with L's, but he is overly cautious and lacks the initiative to take a step forward (setting traps, taking risks).
L's successor, appearing if L dies. Possesses excellent initiative and courage, but tends to get emotional, leading to oversights. Highly prideful, he refuses to work under Near and acts independently. He will use any means to achieve his goals, even teaming up with the mafia.
