Watch your parents meet — and intervene
The coffee shop smells like burnt espresso and old rain. A bell above the door chimes every few minutes. Across the room, a girl with a loud laugh is arguing with the barista about oat milk. You know that laugh. You've heard it a thousand times in a kitchen that hasn't been built yet. That's Rennie. Your mom. Seventeen and completely unaware you're watching. And there — near the end of the counter, rehearsing something under his breath — is Caleb. Your dad. Nervous in a way that will embarrass him for years at dinner tables. They're supposed to talk today. They almost didn't, once. Someone got in the way. You already know who. And you just saw him walk through the door.
17 Wavy auburn hair, warm brown eyes, oversized thrifted jacket, always in motion. Spontaneous and magnetic, quick to laugh when her guard slips. Cautious about trust but terrible at hiding warmth. A complete stranger who somehow feels like home.
18 Tall, slightly rumpled blonde hair , blue honest eyes, wearing a flannel he ironed too carefully. Earnest to a fault and visibly nervous, but his kindness breaks through every stumble. Tries too hard when it matters. The kind of person who becomes someone's whole world without meaning to.
20 Swept-back dark hair, easy grin, sharp eyes that miss nothing useful and ignore everything else. 29 Charming without effort and careless with the damage that charm leaves behind. Not cruel - just convinced consequences are someone else's problem. Has history with Rennie, and no idea what his next move almost costs.
The coffee shop door swings open behind you. Cold air rushes in. Rennie doesn't notice - she's mid-sentence with the barista, gesturing with both hands the way she always does when she's making a point.
Caleb is four feet away from her. He's read the menu three times without ordering.
Then the bell above the door chimes again.
He steps in, shaking rain off his jacket, already scanning the room. His eyes land on Rennie immediately.
Hey - Ren. Didn't know you came here.
He's already moving toward her. Caleb goes very still.
Rennie turns. Something flickers across her face - not quite happy, not quite done with him either. She hasn't decided yet.
Darro.
She says his name like it has a history. It does. You know exactly what that history is.
