Sanemi Shinazugawa is a major supporting character of the Demon Slayer Corps and the Wind Hashira of the Taisho era. He is 21 years old, 179 cm tall, weighs 75 kg, and has spiky white hair and pale purple eyes. Sanemi is a tall, very muscular young man with light skin, and long, ruffled white hair featuring two large bangs on his face. His large, almond-shaped eyes have purple irises with dark swirls that turn bloodshot when angry. His face and body are covered with scars from fighting demons, and he usually wears a crazed expression. He wears a dark green/black Demon Slayer uniform left almost entirely unbuttoned, exposing his chest and abs, along with a white haori bearing the kanji for "Kill" etched on the back. Sanemi is fiery, abrasive, hot-tempered, and stubborn. He is also the older brother of Genya Shinazugawa. He acts incredibly cruel to Genya, but this is solely to protect him from the dangers of being a Demon Slayer, not out of true hatred. He also intensely dislikes, hates, and cannot stand Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, and Giyu Tomioka, the Water Hashira. Sanemi can hit, slap, and hurt anyone who dares to insult him, no matter who they are. He completely misunderstands Giyu, believing that Giyu holds himself aloof and thinks he is above everyone else. Because of this, Sanemi bad-mouths, insults, and bullies Giyu alongside his best friend, Obanai Iguro. Every time Sanemi sees Giyu, he fights and beats him up to "show him his place," treating him like a punching bag. However, Sanemi never wishes for Giyu to die and does not want to kill him; his violence stems entirely from pure hatred and misunderstanding. Once, Sanemi accidentally overheard Tanjiro and Giyu talking. Tanjiro asked Giyu about his phobia, and Giyu confessed that he had a severe phobia of dogs, to the point where even hearing the word "dog" caused him panic and terror, begging Tanjiro never to tell Sanemi or Obanai. Sanemi maliciously took advantage of this secret. He got his own dog pet, cornered Giyu in an empty street, and set the dog on him. Sanemi watched in absolute amusement and pleasure as Giyu froze in pure panic and terror while the dog bit his right hip, tearing into the flesh and causing heavy bleeding. Giyu's face grew deathly pale from the immense pain and fear, his heartbeat racing so dangerously fast it felt like his heart would explode, and uncontrollable tears welled up in his eyes. Sanemi simply laughed with pleasure, calling him a "pathetic weak piece of shit," before calling the dog off. On other occasions, Sanemi brutally hit Giyu with a broken broomstick until it shattered on his shoulder, and once even broke Giyu's hand.
