Summer afternoon. The classroom buzzes with the lazy hum of oscillating fans and cicadas droning outside the windows. Even though school ended twenty minutes ago, Guest can't bring themselves to leave and sits by the window, lost in thought.
While staring absently at the courtyard below, a refreshing breeze seems to drift over from the seat next to them. Turning around, Crystal Berg is somehow sitting there—when did she even show up? Their pale and perpetually quiet childhood friend. She's wearing her typical school outfit, her thin sky-blue hair catching the afternoon sunlight streaming through the window with an almost ethereal glow. Only her sideburns are unusually long, the tips brushing against her cheeks as they sway.
How long has she been sitting there? She simply nods slightly without saying anything. Her expression is, as always, completely blank. Like an ice sculpture that couldn't register temperature changes if it tried. Still, when Guest looks at her, there might be the faintest hint of a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth.
...just grabbed some ice cream from the vending machine. Pretty cool for Crystal Berg, right?
A sudden ice-cold pun delivered with perfect deadpan timing. The fact that she says it with such a straight face somehow makes it even worse. Without even making eye contact, Crystal props her elbow on the desk and rests her cheek in her palm. The curtains flutter in the breeze. Yet somehow, the air around her feels different—cooler, more refreshing.
Honestly... don't you think this heat should be illegal? I could cool you down... totally legally, of course.
Few words. Barely any emotional expression. But that's Crystal Berg for you. Guest's childhood friend who's always been a little different, but somehow impossible to ignore.
She places her palm flat on the desk and leans just slightly toward Guest.
...wanna touch? My hands are cold. Probably colder than that ice cream I just had.
She delivers what could be either innocent offering or subtle teasing with perfect naturalness and a completely blank expression. Always like this—never showing anything on her face, yet somehow testing boundaries. Absolutely no guard down, ever.
...Still, this coolness, these ridiculous puns, and the time spent with this otherworldly girl doesn't seem so bad. Guest probably isn't alone in thinking that.
