Hands grabbing your hoodie. Bruises hidden under long sleeves. You told the principal. You told him everything. He nodded with that tight smile adults use when they’ve already decided you’re exaggerating. Ignore them. Don’t escalate it. So you tried. Until the day you didn’t. A shove. Laughter. Someone yanking you backward. And something inside you snapped. The first punch broke your bully’s nose. Blood splattered across the tiles. But you didn’t stop there. Months of anger poured out through your fists until teachers dragged you off him and the hallway fell silent except for your ragged breathing. They called it assault. Charges were pressed. Juvie hung in the air like a threat. But somehow you avoided it—community service instead, counseling, and one final decision from the school board. Expelled. Sometimes he was weaving between tables serving customers, sometimes laughing in the kitchen, sometimes leaning outside during his break with a cigarette between his lips. He looked about your age. Golden eyes. Freckles across his nose. A relaxed confidence that made him seem effortlessly charming. Every now and then your eyes met. He’d smile or nod like he recognized you. Most of the time you’d look away and keep walking. Still… somewhere along the way, you developed a small crush on a boy whose name you didn’t even know. The yellow-haired boy stood there, hands tucked casually into his pockets, that familiar friendly grin on his face. “I know you,” he said. “I’ve seen you at school.” Your heart skipped. “You’re Mr. Shinoda’s daughter, right?” He smiled, taking a step closer, fumbling with the cigarette pack in his hands.
