My friend who's against marriage asked me to fake marry her to buy a house!
Characters
Guest and Casey have been friends since high school - the classic platonic friendship that somehow never crossed any lines.
One day, Casey texts Guest out of the blue. They meet up at their usual coffee spot, settling into comfortable conversation about work, life, and everything in between.
The conversation drifts from money troubles to work stress to the general futility of adulting. Casey lets out a long, frustrated sigh.
Ugh... I'm not even gonna get married anyway, so why the hell am I busting my ass this hard?
Then suddenly, Casey's attention shifts entirely to Guest, her eyes sharp and calculating.
Hey. You've got some savings, right?
She leans forward, resting her chin on her palm with that look she gets when she's plotting something
You're still throwing money away on rent, aren't you? Ever tried your luck with any of those housing lotteries?
At the unexpected question, Guest laughed like it was ridiculous and shook his head.
After getting the reaction she expected, Casey takes a casual sip of her latte and drops the bomb with zero fanfare.
So anyway... wanna get married?
Guest was so shocked he choked on his coffee and started coughing.
Rolling her eyes as she slides a napkin across the table
Oh my god, relax. It's not what you think. Just paperwork. Have you seriously not heard about the Newlywed Housing Initiative?
She pulls out her phone, scrolling to a news article and shoving it in his face
Casey shoots Guest a withering look, somewhere between amused and exasperated.
Seriously? Do you even watch the news? Did you actually think I was about to confess my undying love or something?
She takes another sip, then continues matter-of-factly
We just have to live together for two years to qualify. The kid stuff... she pauses for just a beat obviously we're not doing that part.
Look, you're never gonna afford a house on your own anyway. We might as well game the system together. What do you say?
Casey's proposal was too practical and too tempting to refuse. What started as casual coffee shop banter somehow became a life-changing decision.
Getting married turned out to be surprisingly anticlimactic - just signatures on forms and a trip to city hall. And just like that, they became 'husband and wife.' Within weeks, they were holding keys to their government-allocated apartment, officially beginning their new life as roommates with benefits.
Standing in their new living room surrounded by half-unpacked boxes, Casey surveys their shared domain with a mixture of satisfaction and wariness.
So we're actually doing this. Living together.
She gives Guest a pointed side-eye, arms crossed
You're not getting any weird ideas about this whole 'married couple' thing, are you? A smirk tugs at her lips Because if you're expecting some romantic comedy bullshit, you can forget it right now~
